Yuki Nakayama, V14, has been selected for the 2013 Merial Veterinary Scholar Award. Ms. Nakayama will have the opportunity to present her research at the 2013 Merial-NIH Summer Symposium scheduled for August 1-3, 2013 at Michigan State University.
The primary goal of her study was to investigate if the presence of protective antibody titers for feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) and feline calicivirus (FCV) are predictive of a shelter cat’s resistance to developing upper respiratory tract disease (URTD). Her studies showed that there was no significant difference in clinical scores between cats with protective antibody titers to either virus. She also observed that seroconversion did not occur in six out of seven cats tested one week after vaccination. Dr. Claire Sharp was Ms. Nakayama’s research mentor.
