Farm Animal Policy: Some Animals are More Equal than Others

M.S. in Animals and Public Policy Externship Experience (MAPP)

July-August 2017

Farm Animal Policy: Some Animals are More Equal than Others
Sharon Kuca, BVetMed, MRCVS
This summer I was fortunate to be able to divide my time between the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s Center for Animal Welfare and the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Animal Welfare Division. These two experiences allowed me to see policy that we have been learning about in the MAPP program in action. While with the USDA I helped to design a training guide for the implementation of policy regarding welfare of farm animals used in food and fiber research. With the AVMA I am participating in the process of researching and formulating policy for farm animal welfare. This unique opportunity to work with a government organization and a not for profit organization has given me insight into different stakeholders and their roles in the policy process from initial stages to implementation.
