This summer has been full of fun at Nevins Farm in Methuen, Massachusetts, which is not your typical animal shelter. Aside from dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals, they also have a variety of farm animals including horses, pigs and goats. Along with their eclectic group of animals, the shelter also has several humane education programs. For my externship, I assisted with the children’s summer camp. During my time there, I taught lessons on many subjects involving animals, such as animal care, pet overpopulation and respecting wildlife. I was able to use knowledge I gained through the MAPP program to go into detail and explain some of the more complicated issues facing animals. It was really great to see the children so interested and passionate towards humane treatment of animals. I hope to continue educating children and the public about animal welfare as I progress in my career.
