M.S. in Animals and Public Policy Externship Experience (MAPP)
Summer Externship with the Animal Welfare Institute, Government Affairs Office Click link for Externship Presentation
As an intern with the Government Affairs office I performed legal and political research, wrote advocacy materials such as letters of support and fact sheets and attended lobbying meetings and hearings. I learned about many diverse issues through this internship such as the dog and cat meat market, vaquita conservation and endangered species conservation. Being in D.C. also helped me learn a lot about the politics of animal advocacy and the inner workings of the Hill. My classes in advocacy writing helped out tremendously with assignments I was given such as writing fact sheets and LTEs. I also used the public policy analysis skills I learned to analyze current bills. This internship has helped with my future because I have been able to meet and network with many animal advocacy professionals and have gotten a lot of invaluable advice. I also have expanded my skill set to include lobbying and political research. The Animal Welfare Institute also seems to be highly regarded by other advocacy groups so this should help me in my job search.
