The HSUS: Creating a Nationwide Movement for Animals, Person by Person

M.S. in Animals and Public Policy Externship Experience (MAPP)

July-August 2018

Colin McIntire

My externship at The Humane Society of the United States gave me an intimate glimpse into the inner workings of animal advocacy at the state level. The HSUS may have been founded to tackle the overarching issues that were too large for smaller animal organizations to take on, but their approach is still very much about engaging at the local level and empowering the individual. To that end, I spent this summer creating instructional materials for animal advocates, canvassing against puppy mills, organizing a ceremony celebrating local law enforcement officers, and preparing for an upcoming summit on passing local ordinances. My time at The HSUS helped solidify many of the lessons touched upon in MAPP, especially the all-important process of coalition-building. These experiences have given me a mindset that I believe will enable me to work with other animal advocates to start building a more conscientious and effective movement.
