As International Policy Intern at World Animal Net (WAN), I helped identify opportunities for advocacy, engaged various international policy streams, conducted research and developed communication and marketing materials.

I joined WAN’s Executive Director in Paris where we attended the General Session of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), liaised with members of the International Coalition for Animal Welfare (ICFAW) and observed sessions and strategy meetings.

In the lead-up to the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the United Nations (UN), I wrote position statements and planned and executed a marketing strategy which aided our lobbying efforts during the forum. I attended the two-week event at the UN and spoke with delegates from all over the world about animal issues.

Through my work at WAN, I learned about the different avenues that can be utilized to integrate animals into international policy frameworks. I also learned firsthand how animal advocacy and lobbying are conducted on a world stage.

The MAPP program was instrumental to my success at World Animal Net. From understanding the importance of framing and targeted messaging, to the breadth of policy knowledge I acquired during my time at Tufts, everything I learned was put to use. The program gave me the confidence I needed to work alongside representatives from worldwide animal protection organizations.

Here are some photos from the first two days at the 87th General Session of the World Assembly of National Delegates of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) , and then at the MS in Animals and Public Policy Student Externship and Research Poster Presentations on September 7th.
